This is a Photo of the first ever use of an INMARSAT A Terminal from the South Pole. This Photo was taken in January of 1993 and was submitted by Denis Tupec (kneeling). The TCS-9200 shown in the picture was provided to Antarctic Support Associates by MTI to determine the feasability of operating INMARSAT equipment from the South Pole. Notice the elevation of the antenna. It is pointing directly at the horizon. Due to our superior high gain antenna design we are able to operate in the fringe areas of the Inmarsat satellite footprint. |

Following
successful operations during the WINTER OVER of 1993, MTI provided a TCS-9700 to the
National Science Foundation and NASA for 1993/94 SUMMER. The TCS-9700 is the only other
Inmarsat terminal EVER to have been operated at the South Pole. This INMARSAT A terminal
was used to interconnect the South Pole to the INTERNET at 9.600 Baud and subsequently at
56Kbps. For details of the program contact our Sales
Department. This photo was submitted by Dave Newsome (Pictured) an
independent
contractor to NASA NSI.
